To Be Broken... * plus the FIRST & LAST song by DIVIDED!

Evil in Hebrew comes from the idea of "broken;" evil in Greek comes from the idea of being so stressed one has become sly, deceitful, double-minded, to be broken, in other words. The Hebrew names the condition, the Greek supplies the cause and the consequence. Stress breaks people. Broken people behave defensively, have withdrawn into themselves to fight an inner war, and live life removed, in a dream, or rather a nightmare. Under stress people can break into nonhumans
in behavior, animal-like, violent.
A human being is an organism and subjected to consistent stress above the particular human organism's tolerance the organism begins to break. Brokenness leads to physical disease, emotional disease, insanity, suicide, murder.
Evil, in the bible, is not a moral issue. Evil is a disease. It is not a legal issue. It is not about the fact that the diseased manifest their disease in antisocial behavior, the breaking of laws, but about the disease of brokenness, of lack of integrity, wholeness, internal harmony.
It is along this axis that the Scriptures address humanity, the axis of brokenness and integration. Salvation is restoration of integrity under conditions of extreme stress. How does one do this? What is the cure?

It is not hocus pocus, but a consistent program of self-discipline in exercise of the will, and the will goes towards the things desired. The desires are those behaviors learned to mollify the pain of being so overstressed one has broken. It is a vicious circle. Stress is painful; the organism learns how to mollify the pain, to take a vacation from the pain, and it is those things the broken mind desires.
Thus, it is these things one must stop doing. This is where Christianity can seem dour. It is like addressing a group at a bar and suggesting everyone take the pledge. Stop doing the things you most want to do? Yes. Stop following your script. Start acting for yourself.
The brokenness keeps happening generation after generation because the system children are raised in breaks them. They are designed to be broken. This is what civilization does. It controls aggression by retaining adults in infantile states, where they can become drones in the economic system.
Postindustrial civilization has many ways to tear apart a human soul. It has many ways to mollify the attendant pain, despair, bitterness, and spite. The Bible is a love letter from the past, from when people remembered what it is to be a human being. It is inviting us to become adults, to cease brokenness, and thereby, to become righteous.
